Happy Star Wars Day! Today, The Rise of Skywalker officially opens in theaters! I am a newcomer to the Star Wars franchise, but after seeing the recent movies I am excited to see what this one brings! Given the importance of the lightsabers in the films, I made them the inspiration for this week’s dessert. These chocolate covered lightsaber pretzels are dipped in colored candy melts and topped with sparkling sanding sugar. Just as fun as the ones in the movies! Well, maybe not, but certainly more delicious : )

red and blue chocolate covered pretzels

To make these pretzels, you’ll need a bag of pretzel rods, candy melts, and sanding sugar. I used red and light blue candy melts to reflect Kylo Ren’s and Rey’s lightsabers.

First, line two baking sheets with parchment paper so you have a place for the dipped pretzels to set. The candy melts will harden if not used after melting, so I recommend melting one color at a time. Place the candy melts into a microwave safe container. I found it easiest to use the container that you will dip from, if possible. In my case, I used a tall liquid measuring cup, but you could also use a tall mug. Make sure to stir the candy melts every 30 seconds while melting them.

Once melted, dip the pretzel rods into the candy melts, rotating them to create an even layer of coating. Once covered, gently shake off any excess coating and place on the parchment paper lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with sanding sugar, if desired. For my blue lightsabers I used a touch of edible silver pearl spray. Don’t wait too long to add the sanding sugar as it will only stick if the candy coating is still wet. Repeat with desired number of pretzels and then move on to the other color candy melts.

Let the pretzels rest on the baking sheets until fully set, about 15 minutes. Shake off excess sanding sugar and enjoy!
